A review of a book devoted to locomotives on a site devoted to anything but trains doesn't sound pretty. In this regard, the book does what it says on the tin. It is a
study of steam locomotives of the constituent companies that came together to form the GSR as well as those of the GSR itself (post 1925).
However, all is not a lost cause, as there is material of interest to those whose interest in railways lies on the IH side of the fence. These include a chapter of the
effect of WW2 on operations due to coal shortages, a statistical comparison of the operating results of the GSR compared to the GNR(I) based on mileage and an
appendix on "valve layout and superheating". Other aspects that get a look in include pioneering developments such as petrol railcars, the Drumm battery trains and
"Pat", the coal stage locomotive in Cork.
Having said that, I am not sure that this would justify the student of IH spending Stg£35 on this book, unless locomotives are your thing, in which case it is another
quality publication from Colourpoint.
